EMD E5
Preserved EMD E5 at Illinois Railway Museum
The EMD E5 is a 2,000 h.p., A1A-A1A passenger train locomotive. The cab version, or E5A, was manufactured from February, 1940 to June, 1941, and 11 were produced. The booster version, or E5B, was manufactured from February, 1940 to March, 1940, and 5 were produced. The 2,000 h.p. was achieved by putting two 1,000 h.p., 12 cylinder, model 567 engines in the engine compartment. There were also two generators.
The cab version had a cab, or crew compartment. The booster version had no crew compartment, and therefore, no windshield. There were simple controls inside the unit to move the booster around in a yard. Boosters were not to be occupied while on the road. They were built to save on the expense of building the crew compartment.
The last surviving EMD E5 diesel is owned and operated by the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. Last used on the Fort Worth and Denver Railway (CB&Q subsidiary) on the Texas Zephyr, the E5 sports a stainless steel skin and shovelnose front, and is matched with stainless steel passenger cars from Burlington's Nebraska Zephyr.
