City Island Bridge
The City Island Bridge is a fixed bridge in the Bronx in New York City. It is the only connection between City Island and the mainland Bronx. It is a steel bridge with much wrought iron decoration. Local residents sometimes call the body of water that the City Island Bridge crosses "The City Island Channel" which connects the northeasten Eastchester Bay with Southwestern Pelham Bay in Long Island Sound.
The bridge consists of 2 traffic lanes (one in each direction) and a central lane reserved for fire and emergency vehicles.
Originally it was a turntable bridge that crossed the Harlem River to Manhattan but it was moved in 1901 to the City Island Channel and replaced the old wooden bridge for City Island.
It is now scheduled for demolition and will be replaced by a Cable-Stayed Bridge after the temporary bridge is built next to it. There is a small movement on City Island to keep and repair the present Historic and ornate bridge, but the City Of New York has ignored them and is going ahead with scrapping and replacing it.
