American Airlines Flight 1420
American Airlines Flight 1420 was a flight that flew from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport near Dallas, Texas to Little Rock National Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas. The airplane on the flight crashed on June 1, 1999.
On June 1, the crew of Flight 1420 learned that winds were at 10 knots (19 km/h) from 190° when they contacted approach control inquiring about its night landing. The crew was told to expect to land at runway 22L. The tower instructed a go-around when Flight 1420 was on its 4 mile final, meaning that it could not land as originally planned as the winds shifted to 15 knots from 010°.
When the plane was planning to land at 4R, a thunderstorm appeared at the airport. The winds that the flight landed in were reported to be 76 knots from 010°. The airplane hydroplaned off the far end of the runway and into an approach lighting tier. N215AA, the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 broke into three pieces and ignited.
The pilot, one of six crew members, died in the crash. 10 of the 139 passengers also perished.
